The topic is one of the most polarizing, and complicated, in the U.S. wine world. And more people than ever are going sweet.
How could you not, after sampling Rockbridge Winery's iconic V d'Or blend of Riesling, Traminette, Vidal Blanc, Vignoles? That wine's been draped with more golds than Simone Biles. Or Barboursville Vineyards' lush, tropical Paxxito, pictured here? (Paxxito was chosen as a Top 12 wine in the 2024 Virginia Governor's Cup competition.)
In Virginia, sweets go way beyond upscale dessert wines. You can get authentically-crafted fruit wines, insanely good meads, refreshing ciders, solid port-styles, and lots and lots of semi-sweets.
